Archives For Frustration

There are 365 days in a year. I’ve never tried, but I would be willing to bet, if I placed the word happy on each day of a calendar when I finished the day happy, there would be less happy days than not. If it were one big wall calendar, you could back away from it to get the whole view, and it would look like a hopeless sight. However, that’s not the way I would see it as a Christ follower.

As a Christ follower my goal is not happiness. My inheritance is joy. Joy is not even a goal. Joy is a gift. I don’t have to fight for it. I don’t have to earn it. The Spirit of God living on the inside of me gives Joy. Now, back up from the same calendar and take another look and you would see the word joy on every day.

Happiness is an emotion. I enjoy experiencing happiness, but it’s not life giving. Joy, on the other hand, is a bi-product of the Holy Spirit. Joy arrives each day on the wings of mercy and walks with me through the ups and down of everyday life. When I walk with joy, happiness often merges along side of me for a while, and it’s nice, but when happiness leaves I don’t grieve because joy is always there.

Joy can’t leave because it’s a gift of God. Weeping might endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning.  If happiness is your goal there are many things you can do that brings it to you temporary. However, once that experience is over, happiness runs off and begs for you to wear yourself out chasing it again.

You never have to chase joy. Joy is part of the DNA that was given to you when the Spirit of God came to live inside of you. You are a temple of God, and His temple is a temple full of Joy. At times, you might sing a song of unhappiness, but underneath the unhappiness is a river of Joy that can’t be explained or shut off. It just is! Enjoy your joy and you are enjoying God Himself.

Galatians 5:22-23

My Daughter knows a young lady who cuts herself often. The depth of pain and emotional turmoil for her friend is at times unbearable in her heart and mind. These feelings lead to the cutting of her arms. The following poem is by my daughter in order to bring awareness to a very sad and dark reality for many among us

Blacker Than White

They carve their sins into my bones with their cold tongues. I helplessly crumble as their emotionless eyes lap up my weakness.

I cling to my last bit of sanity as their voices control me.

Their sickening laughter, which rings through my ears, reminds me of a haunting death. Their nails, so sharp, slide down my arms and wrists.

My skin falls off like dead rose petals.

Hot tears start to gather under my chin as I go numb.

 They are destroying me… No.

 I’m destroying myself.

 Who are they?

The whispers at night that compel me to stain my pale arm a scarlet red.

They are my memories, my living nightmares.

Someone help me, I’m choking on madness.

Drowning… I’m drowning.

“Experts estimate that about 4 percent of the population practice self-injury, almost equally divided between male and female. According to researchers, “recent studies of high school and college students put the number at approximately one in five,”and nearly 50 percent report physical and/or sexual abuse during his or her childhood. Inadequate parental nurturing or a suppression of emotions, like anger or sadness, may also contribute.”`Conterio, Karen and Wendy Lader. (2007, November 26) About Self-Injury. S.A.F.E. 4 Tips For Frustration

Anger
Are you frustrated and feeling stuck? Each of us has been there. You feel like at every turn there is another dead-end waiting to greet you. You are stuck, and trying really hard only seems to make it worse. Sound familiar?

I’ve been frustrated and stuck many times in my life. I just wanted to throw in the towel and walk away. I have no way of knowing what you might be facing at this moment in your life, or what you are frustrated about, but I know this-God is able to get you through it.

Allow me to give you a few scriptures to meditate on.

Isaiah 41:10 tells us, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Psalms 34:18 tells us, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

Galatians 6:9 tells us, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. “

Now, before you give up and just quit, let me give you a few tips to help your walk.

1. Look again

Many times we stop looking for an answer right before the answer is reveled. Frustration can cause you to not see many times what is right in front of you. Therefore, look again. I once was trying to fix something at my house and was frustrated that I couldn’t make it work. I had tried everything and was ready to give up. At that moment a friend walked up, who was not frustrated, and gave me the solution to the problem. I just started laughing because it was so simple. I couldn’t see it because I was frustrated. LOOK AGAIN.

2. Back up and take the big look again

Many times we get so caught up in a small problem that we cant’ solve, that we miss the big picture of what we are really trying to accomplish. You may find out, by backing up, and looking at the big picture again, there is a different small step to take that will get you there. Trying a different small step might just be the key to getting unstuck. You could just be missing multiple solutions to the same problem.

3. Never stop the action

Don’t allow frustration to stop your work. You are closer to success than you think. When you are not getting anywhere, don’t procrastinate. (See Point 1 Again)

4. Stamp a positive outlook on your eyeballs

Don’t allow fear to speak a bad outcome to you. Imagine a positive out come and let that be the target you aim at and hit. See yourself achieving your goal with God’s power and blessings. When you think positive, it will put the wind at your back.

One last scripture for you to think about

James 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
