Matthew 14:28 (ESV)
And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

Long before you and I were born, Peter stood on the edge of a fishing boat in the Sea of Galilee in the middle of a storm. He had a decision to make, one of the greatest decision of his life. Would he step out of the boat at the command of Jesus or stay in the boat and wait?

In 1444, Conrad Witz painted this scene found in Matthew 14. The question arises, what is so unique about Witz’s Fifteenth-century painting? It is reported, “he is credited with creating one of the only true “great paintings” of this scene.

But why?

It’s a very simple and remarkable answer! Peter was called the “rock” of the church. No painter would ever show the failure of such a great leader of the early church. Peter sank like a rock; therefore, the brush strokes of great painters remained undirected to capture this scene until Conrad dared to show warts and all.

Like all people who find themselves on an edge – a decision has to be made. Do you step out of the boat or wait? You see, no one wants to be painted a failure. It could go without saying- we certainly don’t want our failures showing up on a great painting for the entire world to see. But when you are answering the call of God and fail, is it failure? I would contend that the answer is no. Fear caused Peter to sink and yes, in a classic definition, we call it a failure.

But never forget!

When Jesus calls us to do something, He will not ultimately let us fail. Jack Canfield once said, “Everything you want is on the other side of fear.” Jesus was on the other side of Peter’s fear and Jesus is on the other side of your fear also.

The Beach

woman-570883_1280A beach is a relaxing place of meditation. Close your eyes and your ears open to hear God. Breath through your nose and you taste the goodness of God. The music of waves crashing upon the shore applauds His control. The wind sings a creative song. Your heart longs to be in tune with God more so than nature. It is possible; He has made it so.

There are voices in this world. I speak not of audible voices, but rather, I speak of internal voices. Voices that often compete against the conversation God looks forward to daily having with you. I’ve come to know, I can still the voices, tame the voices and even banish the voices, when I start my day with God.

The “chaos,” called my life (your life), has no true direction without Him. I was not created to follow another voice and neither were you. I was created; you were created, to follow God’s voice. Other voices are dangerous without places to test them. The places of testing are God’s Word, prayer, worship and much study- to show your life walk approved.

Jesus gifted us promises. First, He has declared that He would never leave us alone. Next, those who call themselves by His name will know His voice and follow Him. To follow is the safe way home, the only way home. In fact, while following Him, home finds us. Heaven and earth will come together, and Jesus will make it all right in the end.

Yes, there are voices but I choose not to let them drowned out the only voice that is eternal. God’s eternal voice still seeks you. Yes, the creator still speaks new creation into your life. Are you listening? It’s easy to hear. You will find your spiritual ear in the Word, prayer, worship and study.

When you return to those disciplines, you return to His voice.

The Ugly Side Of You

We give God our best because our best  isn’t restricted by a panic-stricken fear. We give God our best readily, often looking for a divine head nod of support. We regularly seek, not the depth of God, but only his thin layer of approval on our lives. However, giving God our ugly side rarely crosses our minds. Ugly hides in our hearts, safely tucked away-untamed and chained, yet deeply part of who we are. For freedom to reign in your life, for intimacy with the divine, ugly must be released upon the altar of God to be tamed by the Spirit of God. In short, you must allow God to love the ugly side of you.

Change

Releasing to God what I think I control is often hard for me. I suspect the same might be true of you from time to time. However, releasing things to God is the only way truly to live. All of us have something in our lives that needs to be changed for the better, but letting go of it and turning it over to God can be a difficult task to obey. Change is rarely easy, but it’s needed to move forward with God. I think for the most part we all have a desire to follow God but many times our lives, our own plans; our un-confessed sins keep us running in a circle.

We love the circle because it’s predictable. Following God is not predictable but you can be certain He knows where He is going. He will see you through any change no matter how big or how small. The creator has built change and transitions into life. The only one that doesn’t change is God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. We can’t control the seasons or transitions, but We can control how we respond to the changes.

Change is rarely easy, but it’s needed to move forward with God.

To hear more and go deeper listen to the message, Change Is Rarely Easy.

The Veil Calls

June 6, 2014 — 2 Comments

maya[pp]I struggle not so much with the chaos of the world as I do with how to reshape the world. My life must count beyond this life. I know it matters. I know there is an eternal world just thinly veiled beyond my walk. The veil solicits me to poke holes in it so the healing will leak in.

Matthew 27:51 (NKJV)
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

Truly Live

waiting

I breathe, yet my soul is still heavy. I laugh although my soul is unrested. I battle, but the fight is never without only within. I thirst for significance discerning it’s not the goal of life. I’m just like you…waiting on the shore hesitant for my ego to die that I might truly live.

grace

2 Corinthians 12:10 “For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong.”

What would make a man cry out those kinds of words? There is only one answer, one word. Grace!

Ultimately for the Christ follower, life is only livable by grace.

Grace alone touches what is beyond your control.

Grace transcends any questions we may have.

Why can’t I find happiness? Why am I trapped in depression? Why do I have no close friends? Why does everything in my life seem to fall apart?

Most often answers to your hard questions are not found in asking more questions but rather by surrendering to His grace by saying, “Nevertheless.”

God’s grace grows perfect in your weakness

The Quiet Canvas

fairyjar1The simple act of being quiet before the Lord is a discipline that should be visited often. Quietness is a blank canvas before the Lord. In quietness, God makes faint undertones of color building to a masterpiece for His glory. He is the artist; you are the canvas.

My daughter Madison is an artist. She has work hanging all over her room. Each work tells a story-a story that was in her heart at the time. I’ve had the honor of seeing most of her work come to life over the days; weeks and months she would work on them.

Sometimes, I didn’t have a clue what the painting was until almost the very end. I would have to wait, and then once she put the finally brush strokes to the canvas the work would come alive and completely reveal itself. At other times, I could tell from the beginning what the work was and so in that case, the joy would come in watching her layer the colors making them burst off the canvas.

Quietness is where God works. Let Him paint. Let Him layer. Let Him choose the colors. Your part is to choose quietness. He waits for you. He has a grand idea for using you.

Quietness.

Some Day

Some day all things will be set right. Some day all things will be made new. Some day there will be a new heaven and earth. Some day New Jerusalem will come down to meet us. Some day the dwelling place of God will be with us. Some day there will be no more tears to dry.

Some day death will be no more. Some day we will see Him face to face. Some day His glory will flood the universe. Some day we will put on our resurrected bodies.

Some day every day will give way to eternal days. Some day there will be no more crying and pain. Some day we will receive from the spring of water without payment. Some day nations will walk together without war.

Some day bloodshed will be no more. Some day the future gives way to eternity with God. Some day might just be today.
