Becoming less is not a demotion in God’s economy. In fact, it’s the very opposite of a demotion. Becoming less is the call of God for our lives as we serve others around us. Becoming less is God’s invitation to become more like Him. Becoming less is God’s spiritual promotion for our lives.
As a pastor I’m often asked, “What is your favorite verses in the Bible?” It’s always a tricky one for me to answer because I much rather be asked, “What is the most convicting verses in the bible for you?” Read the following verses slow and you will find my answer to the latter question.
Mark 10:43-45 43 But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Well, there you have it. The secret is out. Mark 10:43-45 is the most convicting verses in my life. We live in a world that is self-seeking and self-promoting, and yet…God calls us to be the very opposite because it’s what Jesus did. It’s not an easy call to embrace but it is possible. There are many things I could write about becoming less, but I’ll just give you three keys today for you to think about.
1. Embrace the call of God to become less
Jesus embraced the call to become less by coming and living among us. Just that truth alone blows me away and humbles me greatly. He went to a cross for me. He died for me and while dying He cried out, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.” He embraced the call to become less for us. Surely we can become less for His glory.
2. Cultivate in prayer the desire to become less by serving others
Prayer will adjust you to the will of God. It’s just that simple. The more you pray, the more you will be comforted to become more like Him. Ask God to use you to be a servant for His glory and He will do it. I promise.
3. Obey the invitations God shows you in the harvest field
Once you begin to pray about becoming less and serving others…WATCH OUT! He will provided you more opportunities to prove your heart than you can imagine. He will open your eyes to see the needs all around you. What has always been there will become unavoidable to step over. You will no longer be able to look the other way. You will have eyes to see Jesus in the needs around you, calling you to serve Christ. Just remember what Matthew 25 teaches us. Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me..”
Now get out there and get your spiritual promotion.
